I would like to say my students are typical middle schoolers. To a certain extent they are, but many of them had to face additional struggles. We've felt the crunch of losing major manufacturing companies, that once employed many parents and provided a source of revenue our school could count on. Now our school serves over 90% free and reduced lunches and the budget for supplies has been virtually eliminated in the middle school. Our community has seen many tragedies over that last few years including a rash of tornadoes, flooding, political unrest and riots. We remain resilient. People have pulled together in each crisis but it takes a toll on our youth. Very few of these young people have had experiences beyond their own neighborhood. It is my challenge to expose them to the wide world, inspire a curiosity that will propel them to further questioning and learning. I hope you will support me towards this goal.
