We're a PreK-12 charter school in Oregon, with about 360 students. Our school doesn't look much like a school from the outside - it used to be an industrial machine rental shop. Our playground is the former parking lot - and it still looks like it! Our teachers believe deeply in the power of experiential learning and hands-on inquiry. In the classroom, we work hard to incorporate movement, play, and activity into our lessons. But during their recess, the kids have few choices. Kids wander around, bored, or sit and talk with friends instead of playing, running, and jumping. Lack of activities causes arguments and tension on the playground. Here in Oregon, we have kids who love to be outside no matter how chilly or rainy it gets. Please check out this video my kids made to show you why we need a new playground!
