Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Vibrant and delightful are two words that I use to describe my students. They are creative by nature and always excited about learning!

My students are urban city youth that come from middle to low income homes.

They are 9th and 10th grade students that range in age between 14 and 16 years. The approximate income of most families in our community is 15,000 to 30,000 annually with most of the homes led by a single parent or guardian. It is predominately African-American a with an increasing Hispanic population. Our school mirrors our community with more than 95 percent of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. However, our school works to produce quality students that aim to be great everyday and in every venture that they embark upon. In the past four years, we have increased our graduation rate by more than seventy percent.

My Project

Twenty First Century technology is great for classroom use but incorporating it becomes difficult when there is a shortage of paper for students to print completed work. In addition, it is hard to develop hands-on reading activities that use reading manipulatives without paper. Many of my students are struggling readers. The extra paper will provide me with the ability to design differentiated lessons that incorporate creative graphic organizers, foldables, and other exciting hands-on activities that will engage them in the content. The students will be able to retrieve significant information and have a source to aid them in retaining the content. The continuous use of these reading manipulatives will help students with their literacy. They will learn how to use various reading strategies to help them comprehend information, build their fluency and encourage them to think positive about reading. In addition, they will learn that reading can be fun and learning is enjoyable!

Providing these material to students will have a huge impact on student achievement in my classroom.

I believe my students will began to truly value their learning and expect more of themselves. They will build a tolerance for reading not only material they enjoy but material that will help matriculate them to greater academic levels. Ultimately, it will aid in helping to produce some of the greatest and most responsible prepared citizens for our society and world.
