My Students

Try to imagine the characters and setting in the stories your students write. It would be so much nicer if their work was accompanied by visual representations of their writing.

Our students attend a New York City public school in one of the most diverse areas in the nation.

We live in the borough of Queens and our many cultures and languages spoken enrich the school community. Because we have an international perspective, we appreciate all the arts, and the visual arts speak to our students in their academic work. We'd love to give them the high quality art resources that sends the message that they deserve the best, especially in the realm of art. The arts are suffering many budget cuts and materials such as pastels are scarce. That is a particularly beautiful medium that allows students to create various shadings by smudging the pastels. Good quality pastels are expensive and it's hard to describe the experience of using top tier pastels if you don't have them. Our students are studying artworks and artists. Wouldn't it be lovely to use proper art materials to render drawings.

My Project

Pastels can be bought in kits but the expensive beautiful ones that really can create fine work are sold by the individual pastel color. The shades available are amazing and so nuanced to create quite a range in the palette. The students may not have even seen some of the colors requested in this proposal and may be unfamiliar with the names of these colors. They are the true art palette and that alone would be a powerful learning experience. The writing of these pastels will be used to illustrate will add so much to the students' work. Just to expose the students to these pastels would open up a whole new world to them. How to use these would allow them to expand their perceptions of how art is created and what one can represent with varying shades of the same color.

We'd love to show our students they deserve the finest resources to create art and giving them these pastels to illustrate their writing.

When you expand a color palette it interfaces perfectly with an expanded literary one. Writing is nuanced through the power of words. That makes the use of these pastels to accompany student writing the perfect companion piece. Art deserves to be part of our learning and these pastels would go far to achieve that goal.
