You Can Turn My Readers into Leaders

My students need books on their reading level, that will hook them to be lifelong readers and lifelong learners.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently work with middle school students, who range from illiterate to high school level. We have a modest school library and the local public library leaves much to be desired. My classroom is their best bet for finding books that will broaden their horizons and foster their love of reading.

My students come to school because their current district is failing.

Here, we ask students to become leaders within their community and eventually our world. As leaders, they need to be able to access multiple genres of literature as well as nonfiction books that will open their eyes and inspire them to see beyond the limitations that their community often sets on them. At our school, 100% of our graduating seniors will go on to a 4 year college or university. At our campus, the vast majority of our students come in at an average of 2 grade levels behind in reading. Our goal is to not only make up for lost time, but to also push our students further in order for them to gain the competitive edge they need, like their more affluent peers.

My Project

I want my students to be able to not only read books that they will feel successful when reading, but also pick subjects that interest them. For my extremely low readers, these books provide an opportunity for them to finally have a book at their independent reading level. Providing opportunities for them to be successful is essential in reinvesting them in the hard work they have ahead to catch up to their affluent peers. Allowing students to access to books on their reading level is a component of reading that is crucially important for my students because they lack self-esteem and confidence in their literacy. Some of my lowest students, who are 6th graders that read at a 2nd or 3rd grade level, are embarrassed to check out books that make their low reading level obvious to their friends. When they have the opportunity to read books that they can comprehend and enjoy, they will gain speaking confidence and personal self-esteem. My readers will become leaders!

Every day, I hear my students struggle with reading.

The stutters, mispronunciations, and misunderstandings are painful for me to hear. However, the biggest struggle is knowing that my students are not confident in themselves because they are not confident in their reading and speaking. In order to unleash their potential to be the leaders of tomorrow in their communities, states, and the nation, we must develop my students' ability to read and communicate with confidence.
