My students need yoga props.

Yoga has the power to transform lives. Our yoga class has been a remarkable experience for many of our female students. When I proposed a yoga class to my colleagues, there were immediate referrals for students who NEEDED yoga. Soon, students were coming to tell me that they NEEDED yoga.
I work at a transfer high school in Brooklyn, NY.
Our school service students between the ages of 16-21. All of our students have attended 1-2 other high schools and came to us because they wanted to be in a more personalized and safe space to earn their diplomas. Our school is located in an area where the statistics for crime and high school drop outs are high and we are hoping to slowly bring change to the community. Change starts with the individual, and as a staff, we work closely with students to create change within themselves, so that they too can be agents of change in their communities.
We started a twice-a-week yoga class for a group of female students at the school. We wanted to offer a space for students to learn about and explore the benefits of yoga postures, breath work and meditation, and to learn techniques to help them manage their anxiety and stress. We have been meeting for a month now, and the class has been pure joy. Deep breaths, beautiful postures and smiles fill the safe space that we have created. The students come in eager to 'feel better' and relax. We have yoga mats from a previous budget, but would love to have additional props to enhance the experience. We are requesting yoga mat towels so that students can feel comfortable putting their faces on the mats, as the towels can be washed. We are also requesting additional yoga blocks to help support the postures. We are currently sharing 8 blocks, and they are going to the students who show up to class first. These additional props will allow the students to deepen their yoga practice.
Yoga has the ability to transform lives to bring inner quiet and calm.
All students need this opportunity; so many are often surrounded by so much hostility and tension in their world. It has been such a gift to be able to provide them with the tools to soothe and ease their bodies and minds, to see our students rise from their final relaxation poses with bright smiles on their faces. We hope to continue and grow this yoga tradition at our school.
