Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a high needs public school servicing inner city students from grades K-5. I see 17 classes at least once a week, which amounts to 350 students total. During class we discuss and explore a multitude of aspects and genres of dance; paying special attention to the importance of maintaining a healthy physical and mental relationship with yourself and others.

One class has a reputation in the school, and it's not a good one. The first day of school I had to sit a girl out for kicking a boy in the hallway. Frequently the aggression that many of my students hold inside is eventually expressed inappropriately. I emphasize respect for everyone during my dance classes, and I incorporate some yoga stretches and relaxation as often as possible. With the intention of calming students down, and stretching the body out which sits in a desk all day. Well, you could imagine how thrilled I was when one week this same girl approached me before class and asked if we were going to do yoga today because she loves it. She continued with, "I even remember the poses and I practice that at home." During the warm up she would slink into child's pose and look at me with a big grin.

Offering students a clean, soft, comfortable rectangle of a space to practice yoga is so important to focus and relax. The mats will be used for a warm up consisting of stretching, balancing, and relaxing. The importance of a personal yoga mat makes the learning process that much personable.

I want to spread the feeling of calmness, peace, and relaxation to my students who need it so greatly. However, something about letting your forehead rest on the cold, somewhat dirty, yellow, tile floor is not as appealing or comfortable as a plush, clean, yoga mat. This will only be possible with the generosity and abundant giving from someone like yourself.
