This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For most of us, our daily lives contain some degree of stress. For some of us, that stress is more intensified, and can hinder our ability to interact appropriately with peers, focus on a task, or even learn.
Most of my students each year are burdened with stress.
The majority of my school's population live in poverty and/or are trying to learn a new language. Because of this, many of my students take on more stress than even an adult should. This makes it hard for them to get started in the mornings, because they are still concerned with the things happening in their lives at home.
My Project
I would love to teach my students relaxation and calming techniques to de-stress and feel calm at the beginning of each day. I began doing yoga with my students this school year, and it was a very positive experience. Unfortunately, the cold, hard floor is not the best place to practice yoga comfortably, so they need mats! Each morning, as students enter the room, the lights will be off and they will be welcomed to leave their problems at the door and prepare for the day with some stretches and quiet time. This will not take away any time from academics, and will actually prepare them to be ready to learn for the day.
My students cry when they realize school will be out for the summer.
School is their sanctuary from the daily stresses that no 8-year-old should have to worry about. These yoga mats will help me to help my students learn how to calm their minds and remove the stress. With clear minds, they will be ready to learn, and with their learning they will be encouraged to continue learning and end the cycles of poverty within their families.
