This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders have few books, if any, at their reading level at home. Many do not have access to a public library. My job as a first grade teacher is finding high interest books at their reading level.

Our elementary school is located in a semi-rural town outside of Seattle.

Over 78% qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. The English language learners make up 40% of the school population, while 35% percent of our population qualifies for remedial reading and math instruction.

My Project

Specific animal theme units will be created for each set of books. This will inspire the first graders to write research papers, create scientific artwork, increase vocabulary, and most of all get these fantastic students excited about reading. Students will understand that there is a reason for reading.

What could be more inspiring to students than to read about animals?

I have purchased non-fiction books in the past for my students and they are extremely motivating for all students. Please support this project. The success they feel now will continue throughout their life.
