Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You learn more about yourself by learning about the world you live in. I know this because I traveled throughout my childhood and attended schools in many different countries. My students stay close to home but are intrigued by my stories and would love to learn more! This could be the year!
My school is in rural North Carolina.
My class is 98 percent English language learners and my school has 96 percent free and reduced lunch. My students are excited and enthused to learn. That is why we need to have these magazines to read and explore other places! My school is a "Leader in Me" school, so students learn about the seven habits that build great leaders. Learning about events and places around the world will help my students extend their understanding and better know how to be a leader wherever they go!
My Project
We are feverishly working on improving reading skills. These magazines will help tie in literacy skills into social studies and science. What a wonderful way to motivate students to read! Now students will be reading about things they are interested in. They will see vivid pictures to go along with the text to make their understanding more complete. Text features are abundant in the Time for Kids and Scholastic News magazines serving as a way to teach these important features in the articles. Students will also be able to view additional articles and pictures online from around the world, when they use a code provided by the magazine. I can see the student's eyes light up now! Students are also given an opportunity to complete questions in writing about what they are learning. This will provide valuable practice with writing and sharing about new and different events.
Donations will allow my students to have TIme for Kids and the Science magazine not just once but every week this school year!
Can you imagine the students faces as they see the magazines for the first time on their desks and on line? Current events and Science discoveries are now at their fingertips! The donation will also allow for materials to be organized for later use. How exciting to be a part of changing students lives!
