What? Games in school? Do you remember playing games in school? Scrabble is a fun and innovative way for kids to develop vocabulary, spelling, math and spatial relation skills.

My jr.

high students are from a small rural community in the Midwest. Many are unmotivated to increase their vocabulary by reading. They love to play games! Scrabble is a great game that helps students increase vocabulary, spelling, math, and spatial relation skills without even knowing it is happening. Like most school districts our K-8 school has experienced many budget cuts in recent years. We have had to come up with creative ways to supplement curriculum at a low cost. Recently, vocabulary has been our main focus to help our students become independent readers and writers.

My Project

Learning to play Scrabble can add great value to any player! Students develop spelling, vocabulary, math, and spatial skills while having fun. Learning new words builds a student's vocabulary which is vital to reading success. Help me share the love of words through the classic game of Scrabble. Not only will my students become stronger readers and writers, they will increase their self-confidence with new word knowledge!

One of the most challenging aspects of reading is having a strong vocabulary to increase reading fluency and comprehension.
