My Students

We are drowning in words! Our class had learned so much new vocabulary that we are running out of wall space and we need a place to keep all our words so we can take them home to show our families how we can be word champions!

Our energetic class of 5th grade students are made up of a variety of personalities, cultures, and life experiences.

We have gifted/high achieving, special education, and even the twice exceptional student. They are very creative learners who love to solve problems (which is actually where this idea came from).

My Project

In our vocabulary binders, students will be able to categorize and sort words from every subject. These binders will give students the space to list the word, the definition, an example and non-example for each word to help students understand word meanings. Each day, it is an item that stays out so that for every subject students can organize their words. We have academic words, "flocabulary" words (words in rap), test-taking words, "word champion" words (students submit their own unknown words that they discover), and "randoms" which they LOVE to find! They then uses their binders to play games. Our most favorite game, Password, where students use their notebooks to give clues or "persnickety" where students combine words from the notebooks and they can create "made up words with meaning" and a crazy definition to show that they understand word meanings. The possibilities are ENDLESS for what we can do with all our words in the same place!

This project is so important because our class is so vocabulary driven and students LOVE to use their new words.

With such limited classroom space, we are reaching our limit for space that even the students are concerned that we "won't be able to learn new words!". They are also so proud be word champions that they would then be able to share their words with their families! Having a place to keep their words gives them a greater opportunity to use them every day.
