Remember those amazing novels that both taught a valuable lesson and had you mesmerized and not wanting it to end? "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio is exactly that novel. I want to introduce "Auggie" and his friends to my classroom students. They will learn a lot from these wonderful characters!
I am honored to teach a fun-filled and diverse group of fifth grade students.
Our building is a Title I school, and many of our students do not have easy access to books that will both excite them and make them fall in love with reading.
Numerous students have shown interest in getting this novel from the Scholastic book orders, but the students usually don't have money to buy the books that really interest them.
My Project
There are so many wonderful themes that my students can and will learn from this fabulous novel. My students will see why it is important to "choose kind" and to treat others with respect. The students will be able to relate with the characters as they realize that the characters also have problems in their lives and see how they handle the situations. The students will fall in love with reading as well as the characters such as Auggie and Jack and Summer. They will learn about point of view, vocabulary, plot, friendship, and precepts...the list and lessons are too many to list with this must read book!
There are currently no copies of this novel in our school library, and I have also attempted to get the novel from our public library...but to get a class set is difficult right now due to its popularity.
If we had our own classroom set, we could take our time and enjoy the novel and lessons. In addition, the author plans on writing additional sections/chapters to this book, so the kids will continue to enjoy these characters for some time!
