This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As I finished R. J. Palacio's book Wonder, my first thought was, "My students absolutely have to read this book."
My students are creative and insightful, hardworking and intelligent.
They're also part of a school district that, across the board, has serious gaps when it comes to literacy, with ELA scores lagging far behind math. At Casey we believe that "if you want to succeed you have to read."
My Project
As research continues to emerge showing that non-cognitive skills (character traits) are more important to long term success than hard cognitive skills ("the three R's"). I know that using literature to teach character is vital. My students will be doing a novel study on Wonder, using composition books to extend the text through writing. Wonder is about a boy who suffers from a severe facial abnormality transitioning to middle school. It's brimming with lessons about kindness, social skills, and identity.
In education time is precious.
I only have a certain amount of time with my students and I want to make it count. In our Wonder book study we'll be honing important literacy skills while having vital conversations about character building. My students will emerge from this study both having grown as readers and having gained a new perspective on important things like friendship and self-worth.
