Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Nydreama, Erica and Jasmin love doing art. However, since our school is considered a "failing" school, we have double periods of math and literacy. In order to accommodate their basic academic needs, art, dance, and music are removed from their daily schedule.
Our students see what the art students do, and wonder why they can't be them. As a teacher, the guilt is overwhelming. Since I teach English Language Arts, I make it a point to incorporate art into lessons. After asking students what they want to do, they said they want to be painters. In order to give them what they want, we need everything from start to finish.
The project began when we were doing haikus. I was using flimsy plastic stencils to put letters onto the hearts. The kids were asking if they could use the stencils. Since I only had one set of stencils, I couldn't afford to have the students use it and damage it. That's when they asked if we could get more stencils. The project then started to develop when Erica said, "We could do so much with them!" Then the canvas ideas were brought up because some of the students saw them in the art room in an after-school reading program. After hearing their desire, I had to make it a point to fulfill their wish list.
This project will foster collaboration while creating ways to ensure our classroom is a nurturing and welcoming environment. Through this project, the students will use academic skills by incorporating themes from our recent novel and applying those themes to their own lives.
In Their Own Words
Hi. My name is Nydreama. I love doing art. The first day of school in Ms. Z's class, our homework had art in it. I knew from that day we could do art in class and our teacher would listen to our ideas. We want to decorate our whole classroom with canvas with art on it. Our class has holes all over the walls. We want to cover the walls with nice things. We hope we can become painters.
I know I am a leader because since the beginning of the school year my teacher calls on me to be in charge of projects like this. Since this is art related, I am organizing the classroom makeover. I am choosing groups that will work together. I know how to choose them because I am with them in all of my classes all day. After being in charge of this project, my teacher said she will write a letter of recommendation when I want to apply for a specialized high school.
Our school looks dark and dreary. I want to brighten up the classroom with artwork. We can't put our art in the hallway because it will get destroyed by other students. And if there is a lot of art, we can have teachers in other classes decorate their class with our art. Seeing our art in all classes will motivate us to work harder.
