Who's Hoo

My students need 200 large owl pellets, 100 aprons, 30 forceps, 30 probes, 30 bone sorting sheets, laminated posters on owls, DVD about owls, specimen set of owl prey, books on owls, food web posters, and owl transparencies.

I have the awesome opportunity to walk into my classroom every day and build in my students a love of Science. I teach every child in our Upper Elementary 4th and 5th grade science lab. Being a Science Lab teacher is wonderful. I have had more bugs, reptiles and other small animals enter my door than I could have ever imagined existed on earth. My students bring such an enjoyment to my profession. With my job I get to teach over 700 students each year. I have students that are highly gifted and students that are severely handicap. Every child gets a chance to learn Science when they enter my classroom.

The children that I teach do not have all the same resources as other schools. We need so many things. My students are excited about Science, but they are missing out when I cannot afford to do hands on activities with all of them. The students ask me if we can do certain projects and in most cases I have to say no because of the expense. I plan for all of the 700 students and give them the same opportunities in the lab. I adjust my teaching to meet learning styles and learning disabilities. I would love to introduce food chains with a unit on Owls. The kids love the idea of exploring things that they are somewhat familiar with and digging deeper to find out more. How fun it would be if they had the owl pellets to dissect and other resources to learn more about owls.

This opportunity is one that my students will never forget. I know that is will carry with them throughout their life time and will build a love of Science. I realize that the cost of this project is somewhat high, but for 700 students it divides up to be about $1.40 per student to receive a great educational opportunity. 95% of the materials that are being requested can be used again with more students in years to come. Once this resource is available our school we will only be purchasing the pellets in the future, so the project can keep on going from year to year. Each of the materials that I selected will benefit the students in learning about owls, food chains, habits, and so much more. It will allow them to explore, think and reason like real scientist do. It will also give them the opportunity to work as a group and explore together.

Your help is not only going to build a love of Science for over 700 students, but it will impact their families as well. Many parents come to me and tell me about the excitement that their child had at school in lab that day. I know that this is one opportunity that my students will share with their parents, siblings, friends and other family. What an exciting learning experience for us all. You are going to make that possible and I greatly appreciate your support and the support of my students.
