My Students

Whole group is a time when the students come together, sit on the floor and discuss our current learning goals. The carpet we are using is old and worn down, and we don't have enough centimeter cubes for everyone to participate.

I teach in a school where more than 85% of our students are on free or reduced lunches.

Parental involvement is not very good as most of our families are 1-parent households where the parent works more than 1 job or the kids are staying with grandparents. These kids lack vocabulary rich discussions outside of the classroom. My kids enjoy learning, but tend to show their best stuff when we sit together away from tables and desks in more of a non-traditional gathering.

My Project

Our current "meeting" area has a very small, outdated, worn-out rug. I would like to update this area where all students have a place on the rug. Even fifth-graders love getting together on the floor. They know it is a place where their views and opinions are respected, and they feel safe to show what they know. We are also in need of a classroom supply of centimeter cubes. We use these cubes for almost all of our math topics from place value to fractions, measurements, and probability. Currently we only have enough cubes for students to share in groups. With the addition of more cubes, students will be able to learn and discover on their own.
