This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Who was...? Where is...? What was...? These questions are asked daily in my classroom regarding historical figures and events.
My students are gifted students in first through fourth grade who LOVE to read!
With over 100 students and reading levels from beginning reader to high school level, and just as vast an interest level. The first thing my students ask when they come in the door each week is, "Can we get more books?" They absolutely love to read.
My Project
And their favorite choices from our little classroom library? Books from the Who Was.. series. My classroom received their first set of Who Was... book in 2009 for a biography project, and the rest is history. These books were so popular, that in 2012, we requested the new editions - more biographies for them to read. This year, we are asking for even MORE biographies, as well as editions of the What Was... series (historical events) and Where Is... series (famous landmarks). This excellent, well-written series is fantastic for introducing historical figures, current producers in our society, and social studies curriculum in general.
These Who Was... What Was... and Where is... books will allow my students to expand their historical and social studies knowledge.
With the focus on standardized testing, too often science and social studies are left out of the equation at the elementary level. These books will allow us to integrate those content areas as part of our reading. Thank you for considering our project and for your support of public education.
