Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year our students are faced with the challenge of learning to do research with encyclopedias that are 25 years old, with outdated information and are falling apart. You might say, well why not use a computer since that's their future. True, but that's another story.

Our students come from low income families who don't have the time and/or resources to help their children with schoolwork.

My students have a lot of curiosity for events and why things happen. They are very smart and very hard working, but whenever I want to teach them about doing research, our resources are limited or null. So that leaves our students out in the cold not knowing how or where to look for information. While some have a computer at home most families can't afford one so their only means to look for information would be through encyclopedias but ours aren't fit for use. They need to learn to do research not just through the use of the Internet but also through books. Or else how will they navigate through middle school?

My Project

I imagine that with an updated set of encyclopedias, a whole new world will be open to them that was never open before. They will be able to investigate countries. They will discover who invented what. They will find out who is who in history. They will find out why events occurred around the world. They will understand and be able to take that information and write about it more thoughtfully in their own words. Their curiosity will expand and they will want to know more, which will in the end make their learning more enjoyable and memorable.

My class likes to question and discuss why events occur and how things came to be.

A set of encyclopedias will help them answer the questions they have about the world. It will help them to look for information that they want and that they need.
