Which Came First? The Chicken or the Egg?

My Students

My classroom is one that encourages having fun while learning, along with encouraging respect, for animals and humans alike. The biggest obstacle in learning for my students is funding. We are a small charter school, with little funding for science materials.

My students love to learn, especially hands on.

They anything having to do with animals and gardening and bring that passion into our lessons everyday. Because our school is so small, we are more like a family. A project for one classroom quickly becomes a school wide interest. Students of all ages can be seen helping each other on campus with different activities throughout the week. This leads to a very interesting atmosphere on our campus, like no other I have seen. I truly believe that this makes our school special and unique and that because of this uniqueness, our students are well rounded kids who are always ready to learn!

My Project

My students will begin my learning about how an egg comes to be. After spending time learning how to take care of newly hatched chicks and how to operate the incubator, they will make a hypothesis based on different aspects of the chickens hatching (color, size, gender, how many will hatch). As the unit continues, they will monitor the eggs in the incubator, making any changes to their hypothesis they need. The tank will guarantee a safe dry place for the chicks to live during observation. Once the chicks have hatched, my students will take a few days to observe the chicks and finalize their findings. Once the experiment is over, the students will say goodbye to the chicks and they will be returned to the farm.

This project will make a difference for many reasons.

My students will learn how to hypothesize and how to change their hypothesis correctly. They also will learn the hatching cycle of fowls and how to properly incubate chicken eggs. This project will teach patience, as it takes time to hatch eggs, and it will also teach them about letting go. Because of their love for animals, they tend to get very attached.
