Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Who doesn't love to get their groove on? My students and their families have thoroughly enjoyed the drumming unit. It was the highlight of our concerts last year.
My students are second through fifth graders, the majority of whom are of Hispanic or African-American descent.
They attend a Title-1 public school in California. Our school has about 650 students who are all eager to learn about music. Students come to music class twice a week. They love coming to music class and learning to express themselves through singing, dancing, and playing classroom instruments.
My Project
Last year, I started a drumming unit at our school using instruments borrowed from another school. The 4th and 5th graders worked together as one to perform songs that include 3 separate drumming parts and up to 3 other instruments like shekeres, claves, and gonkogwi bells. By the end, students were able to switch several times throughout a class period playing each of the different parts. Students learned to listen to each part to ensure that they ensemble stayed "in the groove".
Throughout last year, we worked to acquire new drums slowly. We are about half way to our goal of having an entire set of our own. These new drums will continue to grow our collection. The addition of the talking drums will add depth to our circles, allowing us to add a new timbre.
Help my students connect with each other and the world around them.
These drums will impact hundreds of students every year. The life skills students learn in drum circle will extend through elementary school...and beyond.
