My Students

Do you remember how refreshing it was to participate in a hands-on activity? It broke up the monotony of reading and completing worksheets. Please help my students have a realistic meteorology experience.

My students attend continuation high school.

Due to truancy and/or other counterproductive behaviors, all of them fell behind at traditional comprehensive high schools and are at risk of not graduating on time. Most are from low income, single parent homes and have experienced limited activities outside of school. Some of our students are teen parents. Our school gives them the opportunity to earn credits at an accelerated rate and to graduate with their class. Many of our students have low reading comprehension skills and respond best to hands-on activities. We are a small school with little funding. We need equipment to help us make accurate weather observations.

My Project

Students will work in groups of four to make the following daily weather observations: dew point, cloud type and percent coverage, wind speed and direction, air pressure, rainfall, etc. This project will allow my students to measure and graph various components of weather.

Students will discover correlations between: relative humidity and fog/rain, air pressure and cloud cover, etc.

The hands-on approach combined with analyzing data will encourage critical thinking.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
