Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At the beginning of the school year, my twenty fourth graders were reading, on average, at a second grade level. Four months and 10,000 pages later, my students had grown 0.8 years in reading. Our goal is that each student will grow at least 1.5 years in reading by the end of the school year.

My students grew .8 years in just four months largely because of our guided reading circles--small groups of students with similar reading abilities who are reading and responding to the same text. Each group meets with me two or three times a week to discuss their book. Group members ask each other questions and make predictions about upcoming events. Then, the students independently read and respond to the next two chapters. Our obstacle is that our classroom does not have any guided reading book sets. I check out all of our guided reading books from the public library. Unfortunately, the library rarely has enough copies for each guided reading group member. Therefore, students must take turns with their books.

To reach our ambitious goal by the end of the school year, our classroom needs guided reading books. I have requested six copies of twenty high-interest first through fourth grade texts. Because there are six copies of each text, each guided reading group member will be able to borrow his or her own copy. We will be able to read more pages because the students are no longer sharing texts. In addition, students will be able to write questions on sticky notes in their copies. Finally, we will no longer have to worry about returning the texts to the public library by the due date.

Your help will ensure that all of my students grow at least 1.5 years in reading by June.
