Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
" Books are like truth serum-- if you don't read, you can't figure out what's real."- Rodman Philbrick, Freak the Mighty
My students are from San Bernardino, and the majority come from impoverished backgrounds.
Over 90% are economically disadvantaged, 35% are English Language Learners, and over 75% qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students, however, never let this get them down. They are survivors in every aspect of their lives. When faced with hurdles, my students find any means necessary to overcome challenges that often plague their community.
My Project
My students have fallen in love with Max, the protagonist in Rodman Philbrick's "Freak the Mighty." By finishing the series, I plan to have my students complete a series of tasks related to how Max, the protagonist, changes over time. At the end of the book, students will create book reviews of the book for elementary students to read.
I want to offer my students the chance to finish the series and understand how one self -deprecating character can overcome his learning disability, the death of his beloved best friend, and create positive change in his own life.
I want them to analyze this theme and connect it back to their life!
