Our high school has an award winning AFJROTC unit. The cadet corps numbers over 300 strong and the kids follow the core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do. In the last two years the cadets earned the Outstanding Organization and Distinguished Unit award.
The JROTC program has a curriculum that is established upon the U.S.
Air Force customs and traditions. This instills vital values in all of our cadets which will stick with them throughout their lives. Our students are extremely dedicated and have an unbreakable desire to overcome any challenge they encounter. These cadets are not your average high school students. Their schedules can range from 7am-7pm during the week and on weekends we partake in numerous community service events from NYC parades, park clean-ups, Juvenile Diabetes March to Breast Cancer Walks. These students continuously go the extra mile to become a better student, outstanding cadet and lastly the most respectable citizen they can be.
My Project
One main aspect of our program is PT (Physical Training). Health and fitness helps young adults gain a better outlook on life by having stronger muscles and bones, and also prevents them from being a part of America’s obesity epidemic. All of our cadets partake in our supervised workouts every Wednesday while others exercise after school and during drill practice. The group workout sufficiently helps motivate fellow cadets to become healthier in a fun yet stimulating approach.
The dilemma we are currently facing is our workout conditions.
Our workouts are done on the school floors which causes back and spine aches for some of the students. They persevere through it but yoga mats would be a major asset for our Wing. We are trying to have our cadets as healthy as they can be in a comfortable and safe environment. We tried to keep the cost of the exercise mats down but also pick a brand that was durable. They would have an enormous impact on our 350 cadets.
