My students need an accurate annual vision test to enable them to do their very best in life. If they cannot see adequately they cannot possibly reach their potential.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in an urban setting with high poverty. We have no vision machines. Annual eye exams are state law. With multi-languages and many low preforming students; the standard eye chart gives inaccurate results, prompting false "fails".
Vision can change the WORLD!
My students come from a variety of different cultures and many live in poverty.
School is an oasis where they get fed and feel safe. Any praise or the smallest success they reach is monumental to them.
What I find amazing is that these kids do not look forward to a summer vacation and would rather come to school!
The school is in rough shape, my budget for 630 students is $750.00 for all medical supplies needed for one school year.
My Project
As one can imagine if a child does not see well enough to preform to their ability, learning becomes yet another barrier to success.
If something as simple as eyeglasses are needed to assist in their success, lets do it!
Having this important piece of equipment will provide students, every year, for years to come with accurate vision screening and provide correct information for a vision follow up by a physician/optometrist. It will also allow the school nurse-teacher to follow up on positively identified students who need eye glasses.
Our area used to have a federal program that provided accurate eye exams utilizing state-of-the-art equipment, annually, identifying approximately 30/628 for referrals. They lost funding a few years ago.
Using the Snellen eye chart with many low preforming students as well as being English learners results in almost 8X more failures, of which most are false.
This piece of equipment will literally change lives providing early intervention for visual impairments.
Physicians do not always provide vision exams at annual physicals in the clinic setting, many times missing an important diagnosis.
This can save a student from not preforming to their best of their ability, and the trauma of dreading school with the fear of being unsuccessful.
