My students need this preschool-sized kidney-shaped table to make small group engagements more comfortable for their miniature bodies.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Each child needs space to learn and grow. My group of 17 three- and four-year-olds engage regularly in small group experiences which give them the opportunity to express themselves orally and graphically. This kidney table would give my students a comfortable platform on which they could thrive.
I serve a mixed age group of three- and four-year-olds in a Title 1 school.
Many of my students are new to the formal school setting and need a lot of individual support. They also require teacher-supported experiences to help them gain those social skills that would encourage them to have positive interactions with one another.
When using a standard rectangular table for small-group experiences, we are unable to fit the ninth student in the group and lack space for materials during writing activities even with the group of eight. We currently use two rectangular tables put together to accommodate the size of our groups. This allows us to fit all of the students in the group and their writing materials. However, it creates the problem of students having to climb across the table to reach the main base when playing a game, and reduces space in play centers that require active movement.
Having the kidney-shaped table for small-group experiences will solve all of the problems we currently face without creating new ones.
It will create the perfect safe setting for the small group without impeding play in other spaces in the classroom, which allows us to satisfy multiple needs with this one project.
