"All I have learned I have learned from books." Abraham Lincoln
I teach reading to fifty-five fifth graders in downtown Indianapolis.
For the most part, my kiddos LOVE to read! They ask me all the time if they can have DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time, and it breaks my heart when I have to tell them no (because we have something else to do, like go to lunch or out for recess). I think we're made for each other because I adore teaching with novels, and they read everything that I put in front of them! However, it's difficult to continue teaching with novels when the school and the district's resources are limited. The poverty level for our school's population is higher than normal, and unfortunately, we have more than a few families who live in shelters, in their vehicles, or under bridges.
My Project
We need 35 copies of Number the Stars and 30 copies of Bud, Not Buddy to help improve literacy. My students will use these novels as part of a novel study. During novel studies, we "pick apart" the book and analyze the characters, the setting, the theme(s) in order to fully understand the message the author is attempting to portray. I want my students to realize the power that they have, even as children. I envision using these novels as a way to empower my students to become change agents in their own lives.
Donations to this project will help me by allowing me to continue teaching with novels.
Having this project funded will also help my students continue on the road to becoming successful and effective readers (because a lot of them are struggling).
