Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students learn in a very busy classroom. Along with their small group classes, tutoring is also provided in the room at the same time. Reading forms the basis for success in school, and a nice place to read is essential. If you can read at an appropriate level you will be successful in school.
Our school is a Title I school with a majority of students receiving free or reduced price lunches.
My students are all enrolled in Special Education, from grades K-5. Their academic levels are anywhere from one to five years behind their peers.
Very few of my students have an appropriate place to read at home or access to books on their level.
These students are eager to learn, and reading is essential to mastering all subjects in school. Helping them realize that there is a world outside of Garland, Texas, is one way to put them on the road to academic success.
My Project
I have requested materials to set up a reading corner in my classroom. Currently there are file cabinets and a not so attractive 1970's style cabinet. The plan is to remove all of this in order to set up the reading corner.
The materials I have requested are;
1) A rug to read on. The rug is a space theme to go along with expanding their worlds through reading.
2) Two beanbag chairs to sit on while reading.
3) Two seats for the ground to allow sitting on the floor comfortably while reading.
4) Tubs to store the books in.
5) Labels to organize the books.
By donating to our classroom you will be investing in the future of our society.
These students will be the ones making a difference in the future. Reading forms the basis of all academic subjects, and encouraging a love of reading is one of the most important things we can do. You can make a difference, you are the difference, be the difference.
