I work in a Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program in a public elementary school at California. Our students are expected to speak, read and write in both languages in our program.
In addition to traditional subjects that students will learn in public elementary schools such as math and English, they also learn Chinese language art.
As part of a dual language Mandarin/English Immersion program, my students are inquisitive learners with a passion for writing in both languages!
My Project
Learning how to write Chinese characters needs a lot of practice and repetitions. I teach Chinese for three second grade classes this academic year. My students will spend at least 20 minutes every day to practice writing Chinese characters. This activity will help them to memorize the strokes of each character. My students enjoy the process of writing Chinese characters. Some students told me that it likes drawing pictures.
Students love to practice writing characters on the small white board using dry-erase markers.
It is more engaging compared with traditional pencils and papers. Also, it is much easier for teachers to track students' progress.
