My students need multiple hands-on materials such as the Place Value Activity Kit, the Power Pen Quiz Cards, Sand Timers, Pop and Add Games, and more to help them learn math.
Every day my first grade class starts with Morning Meeting where we are building a strong classroom community that supports each other emotionally, socially, and academically. Our community is amazing, yet we still have a big challenge--we do not have many academic math materials to support us.
My students attend an urban, culturally diverse, and high-poverty school.
They love learning and understand its importance for their lives. One of their favorite ways to learn is through hands-on learning materials (which is a big challenge because we do not have those materials). With this grant, my students will have the opportunity to increase their math skills with multiple hands-on learning math materials.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to learn place value, math facts, number development, and time.
The Place Value Cubes, Student Boards, and Regrouping Kit will help my students have fun while they physically manipulate numbers and see the place value for those numbers.
The Addition and Subtraction Power Pen Quiz Cards will allow students to practice their math facts with immediate feedback. The Pop and Add Games set will allow students to practice their addition math facts at different levels. They will also get to practice addition and subtraction math facts with the Addition and Subtraction Towers--which are played like the game "Jenga".
My students will also have the opportunity to draw on a Write & Wipe Number Line to show their algebraic thinking in computing/solving math problems.
Also, with this grant, my students will get to learn about time while watching the 3 different Giant Sand Timers.
This grant will make a tremendous difference in how my students will be able to learn and practice math.
It will give them the opportunity to build their understanding of math concepts through hands on learning.
