We Like Big Books and We Cannot Lie

My students need 2 sets of books that will encourage them to look inside themselves and at the world around them in a new way while working to make a difference.

My Students

"Books are the best weapons in the world...arm yourself." Through reading, I hope prepare my students to go out and make a difference. By reading the books that I have selected, I hope that my students will become more aware of the people and problems surrounding them and work to improve our world.

High school students often focus on dating, sports, and graduation.

However, in my small, rural school, I encourage my students to look to the rest of the world and the people and problems surrounding them. My students range from 14-18 and are excited to learn. They strive for improvement to their academics, personal lives, and the world around them. They need books that will inspire them further to change their world.

My Project

Through the books that I have chosen, I hope to enlighten my students to the ideas that one person can make a difference in the world. In "1984" we see Winston's actions and their impact on his society and in "The Bell Jar" we see the effects of Esther's doctor in her life. My students need to know that every one matters and that can come through reading. Through these books, not only will we be able to discuss contemporary literature and psychology, but students will be able to increase their reading comprehension, literacy abilities, and hopefully their interest in books and reading in general.

These books will begin an updated collection of classroom sets of things for my students to read.

Students in the 2013-2014 school year, as well as students in years to come will benefit from the lessons that can be taught from these stories. Hopefully students will learn that not only do they matter, but their actions, thoughts, and decisions are also important.
