Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a new charter school, and we are in need of technology to help us implement the new Common Core State Standards. Our 21st Century Learners instinctively know how to maneuver their way around technology. We are in need of iPads to help enhance the learning experience.

My students are extremely enthusiastic and have a deep love for learning.

They're mathematicians, artists, scientists, and writers. They're naturally tech savvy and gravitate towards technology. It's amazing to witness how quickly they learn to use any piece of technology that is put in front of them. My charter school focuses on the idea of teacher-created curriculum, which is thematic based. Our curriculum is rigorous and full of hands-on learning experiences. To help enhance our curriculum and reach our tech savvy students, we need more technology in our classroom. I know with the use of the iPads, it will come in very handy for ALL of my students.

My Project

My students can write. They can write a topic sentence followed by 3 detail sentences and 3 supporting detail sentences and last but not least, the conclusion sentence. BUT details. Those minute details that can make such a difference when a person reads the paper. It is not unusual for the primary students to forget those details. I use to teach a direct lesson on just writing a detailed sentence, stressing the importance of how details can make a difference. I then followed it up with a modeled writing where I would write with lots of detail on a topic. Still, it just was not sinking in for my first graders. How about using technology to assist with the writing process?! I had the students video record their science experiments. After recording, they viewed their video and were able to write their explanation with details! There was very minimal to no assistance from me. It was like the kids experienced their "Ah-ha!" moment and everything "clicked."

By supporting us with donations to purchase the iPads, my students will be able to use it in all subject areas, where we not only use the apps to practice what we learn, BUT we also use it to enhance our learning experience.

We'll be able to use the iPads cross curriculum: 1. Turn our stories into movies, 2. Teach each other content we've been learning, 3. Scaffold our writing in Science and Math, 4. Use apps to read stories and practice standards being taught in class, 5. Research.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
