You know how when you are in the middle of a FANTASTIC book and imagining this new world in your mind? That world is wide open for your exploration! My students, who are deaf/hard of hearing need exposure to that BEAUTIFUL world... to be able to explore the world of Reading!
My students are a fantastic, energetic group of children who love to come to school!
Being that they attend a school for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, they are surrounded by peers (and adults) who are just like them. With that support, they love diving into the world of learning everyday!
Unfortunately, my students struggle in the areas of reading, writing, and language arts. This is in large part due to their deafness and lack of exposure to language in their everyday life. It is my goal to utilize resources available to me to be able to promote and provide my students with exposure to the world of Reading and Language Arts!
My Project
Our current classroom library stock is limited. It does not have the necessary books to motivate students to read. Many of them are above the student's ability to read independently or with a partner.
With these new books, my students will be exposed literature and be motivated to improve their reading skills. These books will become a part of our daily Reading Workshop, where the students will be able to select a book to read independently, with the teacher (me), or with a partner. By allowing my students to have exposure and access to a variety of different types of literature, they will enter the world of reading with confidence! It is with this added confidence that my students will be able to improve upon their current reading level abilities.
Did you know that the national reading ability average for the deaf/hard of hearing is at about a 4th grade level?
I do not want my students to be the statistic. I want them to go above and beyond! It is only with exposure and access to many different types of literature that my students will be able to do this!
