My students need 4 sets of multilevel nonfiction books and a bookcase for storage in order to access high interest informational text during our reader's workshop.
Reading is hard! Reading informational (non-fiction) text is even harder!! This is especially true if you don't have access to interesting topics within this genre on a regular basis.
My students are an inspiring group of 2nd graders who love to read even though the reading abilities in our classroom range a broad span.
We are a diverse group learning together in an inner-city school that is on a mission to change the status quo in education. I have been amazed at the eagerness my students display when it comes to reading this year. I have also been troubled by the fact that we do not have enough high interest informational text available in our classroom library.
My Project
It is very clear which books are popular in our classroom library! They are the ones that constantly remain checked-out and the same ones that I tape together to make sure we can all keep enjoying them. What might be surprising is that most of them are informational text! When it comes time for my students to choose books to read independently, I am always surprised at how fast the non-fiction books fly off the shelves! My students' young inquisitive minds are absolutely fascinated by topics such as animals, weather (especially storms!), dinosaurs, culture, etc. Through your generous donation, my students will receive four sets of multilevel non-fiction text and a bookcase to store all of the new books! The doors that are opened by the love of reading are plentiful, and I am grateful to have an opportunity to open as many doors as I can
There are many things that are not easy to learn how to do: learning how to read, learning which topics genuinely interest you, learning how to have meaningful conversations about what you are reading, learning to love reading, learning how to expand your classroom library.
My students have truly mastered all but the last of these tasks, and that is because it is a task I put on myself. Please help students keep the reading "light in their eyes" alive and open as many more doors as YOU can!
