We Can Write, Count, and More! Kinder Math + Literacy
My students need math manipulatives; boards with magnetic letters, numbers, and counters; and puppets to get them excited about phonemic awareness, phonics, and math!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day, we start off the day with our big goal: To be ready for first grade! Why is it important to be ready for first grade? My students can tell you: So we can be who we want to be! My students have big dreams. By the end of the year, my students will be one step closer to those dreams.
I teach at a Title I elementary school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Unfortunately, many of my students are already at risk of falling behind academically. However, my students are not defined by that or any statistic. They are spunky and fun, always have something to say about everything. They are curious about the world, how it works and how it reacts. They demand to know answers to questions that proliferate their lives. They are ready and able to learn, each and every day.
My Project
Math manipulatives: My students are learning about numbers, shapes, patterns, coins, sorting, and more. All of these buckets of manipulatives will allow for them to practice all of these foundational math skills first-hand during centers time. My students could make an ABAB pattern with the Unifix cubes or sort the coins by type, for example.
Magnetic letters, numbers, and boards: Kindergrtners learn best when they are actively involved in the process. These tools will allow for my students to practice spelling sight words, showing the number using counters, and gain basic phonics, phonemic awareness, and numeracy skills that are so critical for them to be ready for first grade.
Puppets: Five and six year olds LOVE puppets. With the help of these puppets, my students will be led to practice their phonemic awareness (e.g. "Lily the Frog wants you to listen for the beginning sound of APPLE"), counting, print awareness, and countless more skills.
These tools will help my students immensely by giving them the tools to practice their skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, numeracy, mathematical order, and basic geometry.
Kindergartners learn by doing-- these tools will directly allow them to actively engage with what they are learning. Through such
hands-on and engaging activities, my students can work hard, get smart, and be right on their way to be who they want to be!
