"Most people don't have the power of persuasion."
- James Altucher.
Kids today need to know how to get what they want by using the art of persuasion. They love to read about how other author's can use persuasion effectively as mentor texts during the unit.
My students are creative, imaginative and empathetic.
We are from many different countries with many different backgrounds spending time creating our own little community to be the best learners we can. Our school is a mindful community that spends time focusing on teaching students the skills they will need to become lifelong learners. Our staff works collaboratively to assure that each student has the knowledge and skills to grow and learn in today's world.
My Project
The use of mentor texts such as The Day the Crayons Quit, I Wanna go Home and Earrings!has been proven extremely effective in learning how to write with the various genres required by the Common Core Standards. I see this awesome collection of books right in the front of the classroom during the unit. Kids can read them during independent reading, and enjoy them together during partner reading. I'll also use them to read aloud, and for my mini lessons to show how authors use arguments to persuade an audience.
We have over 550 students in our school, and only about 20 books that show persuasion, many not on my wish list.
The access to a variety of books inside the classroom will make it extremely helpful to organize the teaching of this unit. Students will be able to enjoy these books all year, and when we are studying persuasion we can easily find them and not worry about another classroom having our favorite book!
