Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning my third graders and I chant "We Can. We Will. We Want to." This is our class motto. It means that even though there will be challenges we will still try our hardest in all that we do. We will forever believe that we can achieve our goals and be the leaders this world needs.
My third graders are young and determined scholars who have big dreams and goals set for themselves.
They strive to be leaders and many have expressed a strong desire to make the world a better place. My students are facing and will continue to face many challenges and barriers related to their skin color, backgrounds, and social class. These are challenges that they were born into and that without the adequate support and resources will lead them down the path that is unfortunately most traveled by students in their community. This path is NOT one I want my students to get put on. This path leads to a high school where only 30 percent of the students graduate. This path leads my students to a life of street violence, drugs, and incarceration. Students in our community deserve the same chance at success that the students in the more wealthier areas are given. My students will be agents of change and all they need is for their passions, strengths, and dreams to be cultivated.
My Project
Many of the reasons students are falling behind and being placed on an undesirable path is due to the literacy gap that exists. My students live in homes without any books, many are reading below grade level, and most do not have parents who can read with them. I want to cultivate their love for reading and desire to grow in reading by providing them with an extensive classroom library filled with books at all their levels that are of interest to them. These books will be used for them to read independently and for guided reading during literacy centers. Even in the curriculum that we must use for reading my students are not given access to any novels. It only consists of short stories and we are not given time in our schedules to take our children to the media center. Therefore having an extensive classroom library is even more vital. I want to provide all that I can for these young leaders.
Any and all donations will make a huge difference in these children's lives.
Our class goal is to grow on average 2 years in reading. This is necessary for my students to catch up and not fall further behind. Literacy truly is the key to enduring academic success.
My students are going to change the world. They are going to break barriers and take charge of their futures. All they need are champions- people who will support them, love them, and never give up on them.
