My class of eager kindergarten students love reading and math! It is amazing to see the look on their faces when they realize they are capable and successful. Engaging and motivating kindergarten students is incredibly important. I want to instill a love for learning right from the beginning.
I have 17 kindergarten students.
We are part of a prek-4th grade rural school. They are excited to learn to read and be mathematicians. It can be a challenge at times for these young 5 and 6 year old students to build stamina and stay engaged. Technology, such as an iPad, is very engaging for students.
They are excited to listen to and read books on the computer. They love the math games that are available to help practice numeracy, counting, addition and subtraction skills.
My Project
I would like to be able to set up a station with iPads and computers in my classroom so that my emergent readers can take turns in small groups listening to and reading books. In addition, we could use the requested iPad during math time as a station to practice our math skills. Our school has access to great programs and sites that we can use to improve our reading and math skills. We would even be able to use the iPad for small group reading projects such as creating a retelling or rewrite of a book we have read.
As my students build stamina, skill and self confidence they will continue to grow as readers and mathematicians.
All my students will have the opportunity to use technology during reading and math throughout the school year. This means that students who do not have access at home will have the opportunity available at school. I am excited about the possibilities an iPad will provide for my students.
