We are Poets, Scientists, Writers, Mathematicians.....
My students need journals to record their ideas, thinking, calculations, questions, new learning, observations, conclusions, stories and many other things.
"Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve." Roger Lewin ~a British prize-winning science writer and author of 20 books.
If my students leave my classroom without passing a test but have the skills to solve problems, they will be successful in this world.
My kids are so curious and excited about learning!!
We are becoming problem solvers and critical thinkers. Not only are we striving to become independent learning in math and ELA, but we want to become scientific learners as well. A special place to record thoughts and observations would be lovely. This would be an incentive for the students, not to mention something they could take with them when they leave the third grade and keep forever.
My Project
Having journals for these subjects will allow the students to write down and sketch their thinking, observations, idea and so much more. They can take them outside, to the lab, in the gym, on a field trip and just about anywhere learning and problem solving might occur. These journals will also be with them forever, if they ever need to look back or add to them, they will be there.
In North Carolina it is not easy to pass the third grade.
There is legislation called Read to Achieve. There are end of grade tests in both math and reading. There are even curricular items that are not developmentally appropriate for third grade. If I can give them skills to carry them through life, it will be a gift and skill that no test can measure.
