My students need a working distillation model to understand how pollution can be removed from water at a great cost in energy. This will help them understand distillation
Do we sacrifice clean water for energy? My students struggle to understand that cleaning the pollution out of water is energy- intensive, and makes clean water even more precious.
This project will help my 6th graders understand that once water has been polluted, it's costly - and sometimes almost impossible -to clean.
My students are a very diverse group. More than half come from gritty urban areas, and some live in leafy suburbia. Almost none of them have the chance to touch, observe and operate machines that physically process materials, and to directly observe how needed energy is obtained.
My Project
You can make a difference in helping students understand the real cost of littering and other pollution, in terms of energy use and waste heat. They'll understand that their actions directly impact themselves, their communities, and the surrounding environment, since our trash and pollutants end up in a nearby large body of water. This will also help them better understand in our Ecology unit later this year how pollutants don't simply fall out of the water, but become more concentrated as contaminants are left behind during solar evaporation.
Your donation will help to provide a distilling set to my classes.
I can use this to help our students understand many of the key scientific issues of our time - such as how limited are our clean water resources; air, water and thermal pollution; environmental degradation; and other costs of energy acquisition and use. As they engage in these issues, they'll also be improving thinking and academic skills. Your gift will have a big impact on their future.
