Every year my seniors work on a capstone project to address an issue in our community. This year, they have chosen to address the drought in California. Through outreaching and advocating to create a greener campus, my students hope to inspire others to take the first step to decrease their water footprint.
My students are in a three year college preparatory program that offers courses that focus on environmental issues.
These students have spent the last three years taking green elective courses such as the environmental studies and green engineering classes. Through field trips and lots of hands on experience, students have learned that the environment has a huge impact on the lifestyles of individuals. By carrying out projects that make the school more green, the students have learned that the passion they have for the environment could turn into something more.
The students enjoy outdoor educational experiences such as working in the school garden, camping, and taking tours of the various sustainable buildings around the city. They are very passionate about advocating for environmental issues in their own communities. Students at my school have great potential to change the things they feel are necessary for the proper functioning of the school. Once inspired, they are not afraid to speak out and to address the issues.
My Project
My seniors are requesting for materials, 3 barrels, an adapter, and a drain pipe to build a water catchment system for our school garden. With this system, everyone will be able to use the water that has been collected to replenish the plants throughout our high school. Utilizing the catchment system properly will help our high school conserve water not only during the drought, but also in the future.
Students at our school will learn that rainwater is a renewable resource that can be filtered and used as a substitute. With this donation, my students will learn that initiating small projects like a water catchment system is doable. Not only will my students learn to build a sustainable water harvesting system, they will also learn that it takes a great amount of teamwork and leadership to accomplish a goal. They will learn that advocating for a cause is worth the effort.
At our school, we must strive to have our students experience first-hand as much of the practices that we teach about.
As such, implementing a water-catchment system in our school will teach the students about both building catchment systems and the efficacy of said catchment systems in our city. In addition, the students will gain valuable experience in becoming united under a cause and being responsible for change in their community; no matter how small that change is, it can only lead to bigger steps in the future.
