Volleyballs Needed for Urban Team

My students need new volleyballs for practice and competition.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you practice for a sport with split, warped equipment? Somehow, our athletes do and do so without complaining. They show up everyday and work with what they have just because they love the sport.

I work with both our girls and boys volleyball teams.

We are new to the sport, but we get more than 50 athletes at tryouts - many of which have never played organized volleyball. Our teams do whatever we ask them to and work hard everyday they are at practice. Our kids come from all over Chicago and 85% of them come from homes that live below the poverty line. We're trying to introduce them to more organized sports to keep them here at the school and engaged with our staff.

My Project

We have limited resources and our practice balls are mostly all warped and coming apart at the seams. Imagine serving a ball during practice and having it come apart as soon as your hand strikes the ball. This happened this year and I'm afraid this will happen with a great deal more of our equipment next year. The students get sad sometimes when other teams come to play and have all new equipment, but they continue to work hard with what they have. We did receive two new balls, but these have to be used for home games only. The sports budget is too small to invest in every sport we offer and, since volleyball is the newest sport, we get limited resources. Getting a new set of practice balls would not only improve the quality of practice, but show the athletes that there are people looking out for them and want to encourage them to pursue this sport.

If you've ever been involved in organized sports, you hopefully know what it's like to get new uniforms, a new field, or even a new set of balls.

Getting a new set of practice balls will bring up the spirits of our teams and continue to get students engaged in organized sports. As a school, this will inevitably raise school culture and give the student body another team to rally behind. Help us make a difference.
