Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being a kid and having your communication center turned into a post office? Wouldn't that just grab your attention.

I am a Pre-K Dual Language teacher teaching 33 kids.

We have two classes which we integrate throughout the day. My students spend an equal amount of time in both classes immersing themselves in both languages. Throughout the day they are partnered with a native Spanish speaker working to become proficient in both languages. Through this program they are able to learn about different cultures from their peers and they are able to appreciate firsthand the diversity within our community. We are a very diverse community in New Jersey, serving low-income families. My students come to school each day looking forward to engaging themselves in activities and working with materials that are not always available to them at home.

My Project

I started to notice that my students are not as interested in our communication center as they used to be. I want to bring life to the communication center. We have been learning about community helpers and they learned all about the mailman. Wouldn't it be great if my students would be able to dress up as the mailman and deliver the mail from the mailbox into the post office. I think that would inspire my students to want to go to the communication center and write more letters to our friends. It makes them feel important. They are playing the part, but they are also learning in the process. We need the magnetic white boards and dry erase markers so that they can go around the classroom and write down the words that they would like to bring back to the center so that they can write them in their letters. These boards and markers will also be used for small group literacy instruction with our magnetic letters.

This project will have a huge impact on our classroom because it will inspire my students to write.

These materials will not only be used in the communication center but they can be used to create activities for the library and for dramatic play as well.
