Throughout the year in art, I want students to experience as many different styles of art and art materials as possible. With limited budgets, this can difficult to afford some of these more "unique" supplies. I don't want students to get stuck using the same materials project after project.
My students are middle schoolers.
They are boys and girls, grades 6, 7, and 8. Out school is located on a military base in Maryland. Many of my students have military families, who have parents on deployment. Students often move in and out mid-year, and more than half of our students receive free or reduced lunches due to low income households.
Our school is a large school, with over 1,000 middle schoolers. A little over 1/3 of our student population are on my roster and attend my art classes. Our school is also part of the International Baccalaureate program and is designated as an MYP school. This allows and encourages students to make multi-disciplinary connections and emphasizes project based learning.
My Project
Printmaking is a unique art form that many students do not get to experience. My students will use these printmaking supplies to create a variety of printing projects. My students will plan their own unique design, learn how to use tools safely by carving their linoleum, and then will be able to print their design multiple times. During this process, students will also be learning math concepts such as symmetry, types of rotations, and points of reflection, making cross-curricular connections through project based learning.
Students will get to experience a unique form of art they may otherwise not be able to experience.
Students will learn how to use new tools, which will allow them to think about creating art in a new way. Students will also be able to make connections between their math and art class, expanding on the information learned in both classes.
