"Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate their understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject and meets evolving objective in both." Author Unknown
Our primary Extended Resource room students are very excited to be at school each day and they love making things to take home to share with their families.
Our students have developmental disabilities that make it challenging to focus and learn each day. We have a range in disabilities that include: ADHD, Autism, Developmental Delays, Health Impairment, and Hearing Impairment.
My Project
My students need a large assortment of arts and crafts supplies, such as finger paint, sand, stampers, brushes, playdoh, crayons, buttons, and glitter glue to inspire their learning at their literacy and math centers. We will use the arts and crafts materials to create exciting literacy, math, science and social studies lessons for our classroom center rotations. As a result, our students will be more motivated to learn, and their stamina and ability to focus will increase as well as their self esteem through each completed project!
Here are a few ways we will use the arts and crafts materials: to create projects that encourage students to pay attention to detail as well as follow step by step directions; to create props so the students will be able to answer on-topic vocabulary questions through drama; to create collaborative buddy projects that solve classroom problems; to have our students demonstrate how they can solve math problems using manipulatives such as stamps, buttons, craft sticks, etc.; and to provide students an opportunity to creatively solve problems that will in turn increase their effort, focus, stamina, and self-esteem.
This project will make an enormous impact on the lives of each and every student in my classroom.
Many of my students are learning how to hold a pencil, cut with scissors, or paint with a brush. These supplies are developmentally appropriate to help me teach my students readiness to learn skills so they have a much more positive experience in their first years of elementary school.
Arts integration allows children to try new things and encourages social, emotional, and academic growth.
