My students need additional young-adult books to update our current classroom library. These titles are newer releases that include: Eleanor & Park, Unwind, & Wake.
A typical day starts off with sharing of good things that are happening in and outside of school including "We woke up today!" as a staple from a student in 1st period. Students lead several activities on a daily basis, and I encourage students to find the positive in everything.
Our school has started to incorporate many initiatives for our students including personalized mastery, capturing kids hearts, action based learning, and 1:1 learning.
Staff and students use iPads throughout the day.
As a school, we try to incorporate several different technologies in lessons. I once heard, "Reading is the greatest technology!" I want physical books to still be a part of my students learning. Many students are below grade level, these books will help me update my classroom library that has become outdated during my seven years of teaching to continue to promote a love of reading!
My students are amazing and make me smile everyday! They are hard working and enthusiastic, but many are below grade level and struggle with math and reading especially.
My Project
Several studies show that reading, just reading without any test after, increases a student's reading ability. Many of my students are struggling readers and don't see reading as an enjoyable activity. This updated classroom library will help me to continue to promote reading as a positive aspect for my students' lives.
Students will be given time in class to read a book of their choice and will also be given opportunities to share and discuss what they are reading. They will be encouraged to create trailers and share recommendations digitally after finishing a title. These books will be checked out as well so that students can read at home on a weekly basis. I also plan on encouraging parents to read the books along with their children.
Students who feel that they aren't good readers aren't as successful because they are not confident.
This project will provide my students with current young-adult titles to help them enjoy reading more than they do now. With higher confidence comes greater success.
