Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students began a study on the Underground Railroad a few years ago and were amazed at the courage and intelligence of the runaways. They were so curious about the ways that slaves used songs, quilts, and science to escape to the North and freedom.

My students are African American and live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Memphis.

They have a great curiosity and want to learn. I found this project grabs their attention and they want to read books about the Underground Railroad and learn more about it. I found them wanting to read more and wanting to write their own stories about a runaway using the things we had studied and read about.

My Project

My students will create their own Underground Railroad quilt and write narratives that will tell their story of the quilt. My students will learn the strong history of the slaves that helped build this country. They will learn how amazing and intelligent the slaves were. They were able to take simple things and overcome the worst conditions. They took the quilts that they made and used them to tell runaways how to get to the North. They took songs that they had to sing and created directions on where to go and how to get there. They will walk out feeling proud of those that came before them.

I hope that the end product will be that they have more knowledge of just what slaves had to go through to get something that was so important to them.

I don't want to minimize the struggles that my students go through, but if they see what people went through in the past, it might help them to push through for their future.
