Trying to Tempt With the Teens Top Ten Nominees

My students need a selection of books from the 2012 Teens' Top Ten Nominations in order to actively participate in Teen Read Week.

My Students

"If you think reading is boring, you're doing it wrong!" I'm constantly trying to overcome the 'books = boring' mindset of our students. I desperately want to change their opinion of reading. Reading should be FUN, not a torture device teachers use on students to get them to pass tests!

In our Mississippi Delta middle school, reluctant readers make up most of our 6-8 grade population.

Many of these pre-teens and young adults do not come from backgrounds which emphasize the importance of reading. With 98% of the students receiving free or reduced lunches, our school struggles to adequately fund basics such as textbooks; a proper library with adequate shelving and books is low in priority. So much emphasis is placed on test scores in our area, but students increasingly fail to develop a love of reading at a young age, which inevitably leads to low scores on mandated tests.

My Project

Teen Read Week is a nationwide attempt to celebrate reading. I want to offer my students selections from the list of Teens' Top Ten nominations so that they can read and actively participate in TRW by voting for their favorites. I want to offer them books they can connect to and give them a chance to participate in an event specifically geared toward them. I would love for them to be able to connect with teens across the nation and realize that reading CAN be fun!

By donating selections from the Teens' Top Ten Nominations, you will enable my reluctant readers to experience the joy of reading.

These struggling readers will have a larger selection of books that have been chosen for teens, by teens. They will be able to actively participate in Teen Read Week, developing a love of reading and a sense of community. The more children that are reading, the more successful our school will be! Thank you in advance for considering my proposal.
