Students have a lot of fun participating in 6th grade band. They display tremendous development as musicians. Their year commences playing tunes like "Hot Cross Buns," and ends with performances of traditional band literature. A student favorite last year was learning “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
My students work hard, collaborate really well with their peers and genuinely enjoy the process of learning about music and how to play an instrument.
My middle school students choose band as an elective class and are very enthusiastic as they enter my classroom each day. Our middle school is a California Distinguished School, a Title I High Achieving School and 2009 & 2011 "Schools To Watch". We have a diverse student body of approximately 930 students enrolled in K – 8th grade. 49% of students at Tincher qualify for free and reduced price lunch.
My Project
It is very encouraging for me as a music teacher to see the bands and orchestras at Tincher growing each year. Unfortunately, the students now outnumber the number of instruments the school owns. Currently, I have four 6th grade band students that chose to play trumpet, but I cannot supply them with the instrument of their choosing. With your help, my students will be afforded the opportunity to learn how to play the trumpet. They will play on them each day during class, and for the entirety of the time they are in my program at Tincher Preparatory School.
“Learning to play a musical instrument and acquiring the unique habits of mind that come with it is one of the most incredible opportunities that our school can offer your child.
The instrument that will be placed in your childs’ hands has the power to transform their lives in ways that no other endeavor can.” My friend and colleague Tony Mazzocchi wrote this on his website musicparentsguide. I can’t say it any better than that.
